TIN ANGEL ASSEMBLES STELLAR LINEUP TO CELEBRATE 10TH ANNIVERSARY MONTH Donovan, Glenn Tilbrook, Jeffrey Gaines top array of acts helping Olde City listening room notch 1st decade in November as Philly's top live acoustic showcase

PHILADELPHIA -- A rare U.S. appearance by flower power folk-rock mystic Donovan and a two-night engagement by beloved Squeeze tunesmith Glenn Tilbrook top a month's worth of special events in November, when the Tin Angel celebrates its 10th anniversary as Philadelphia's No. 1 live acoustic showcase.

Donovan (Nov. 5-6) and Tilbrook (Nov. 7-8) arrive at the Olde City "acoustic cafe" to help jump-start the anniversary month with a number of other Tin Angel favorites, such as Livingston Taylor (Nov. 2), David Wilcox (Nov. 3), Kenn Kweder (Nov. 9) and Adrian Legg (Nov. 10).

Philly's own Jeffrey Gaines, among an elite group of local alumni able to credit the intimate 115-seat listening room as a springboard to national recognition, returns on the Tin Angel's actual 10th anniversary -- Nov. 13 -- to headline an exclusive WXPN fundraiser event.

The rest of the month will feature popular recurring acts such as Lucy Kaplansky (Nov. 16), Cliff Eberhardt (Nov. 22), Cheryl Wheeler (Nov. 23) and for Thanksgiving Weekend, the band that holds the Tin Angel's multi-night attendance record, local darlings Grey Eye Glances (Nov. 29-30).

Long-standing devotion by these and many other acts has played a significant role in adding the Tin Angel to the prestigious list of Philadelphia's institutions. Rich Machlin, who with Jude Erwin owns the building at 20 S. Second St., that also houses Serrano, believes treating artists and audiences exceptionally well in a superb listening environment has kept them coming back time and again while enhancing the Tin Angel's reputation -- not only around the Delaware Valley, but throughout the music industry.

Comfortably situated above the venerable Serrano Restaurant and located on one of the hottest strips in town -- Second Street between Chestnut and Market -- the Tin Angel has proven to be a distinct lifestyle destination that has inspired a number of copycats across the nation. Rock and folk legends, modern singer-songwriters, Americana crooners, British bards, soft rockers, softened punkers have made the Tin Angel a roots music haven for national and local musicians ranging from country and rockabilly to soul and contemporary folk.

"It's a unique musical venue," says Machlin. "Diversity and comfort have been the driving forces in securing our longevity."

The Tin Angel replaced Purgatory above Serrano in November 1992 when Machlin decided he wanted to add live music to his cozy upstairs space. He hired Larry Goldfarb, who had established his reputation as a promoter and music manager since the 1970s, to be the Tin Angel's music programmer. And together they've been central to the Tin Angel's success ever since. Rounding out the core team is club manager Hollace Detwiler and sound engineer George Pierson, another Tin Angel original.
As an added attraction, Serrano has provided an incomparable "chow down and listen up" synergy with its upstairs counterpart -- offering dinner patrons first crack at reserved seats in the club the same evening.
The wall of autographed artist photos perhaps best tells the story of the Tin Angel's first 10 years. You want names? Here goes: Nickel Creek, David Gray, Martin Sexton, Paula Cole, Ani DiFranco, Patty Griffin, Jonatha Brooke, Melissa Ferrick, Laura Nyro, Dar Williams, Keb' Mo, Duncan Sheik, Dave Alvin, Jorma Kaukonen, Over the Rhine, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Kelly Willis, Rusted Root, Graham Parker, Kristen Hersh, Al Stewart, Tom Rush, Chris Smither,Steve Forbert, Loudon Wainwright III, LaVern Baker, Odetta, Jeff Buckley, Evan Dando, Ted Hawkins, Olu Dara, Freedy Johnston, Roger McGuinn, Rosanne Cash, Janis Ian, Richie Havens, Frances Dunnery, Gordon Gano, Jill Sobule, Mark Eitzel, Gillian Welch, Al Kooper, Luka Bloom, Nils Lofgren, Marshall Crenshaw, Rodney Crowell, Lloyd Cole, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Rick Danko, John Hammond, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, Townes Van Zandt, Morphine, Gil Scott Heron, Christine Lavin, Chris Whitley, Jim Carroll, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Jonathan Richman, John Gorka, Susan Werner, Pat Martino, Holly Near, Moxy Fruvous, Fairport Convention, Tim Finn, Robyn Hitchcock, Ron Sexsmith, Saffire, Everything But the Girl ...

That's just some of the talent that has played the Tin Angel stage during its first decade. And if all goes according to plan, the Tin Angel should be around to continue brightening the Philadelphia nightlife scene for another decade. And another ...

"It's about making an economic go of something I love," says Macklin. "I love the music, and we've been flexible enough to make the music happen night after night, without losing sight of the bottom line."
The Tin Angel is located at 20 S. Second St., Philadelphia, between Chestnut and Market, above Serrano. For ticket information and reservations, call (215) 928-0770. (see next page for November 10th Anniversary Month schedule)

TIN ANGEL FUN FACTS

-- The Tin Angel was NOT named for its ornate tin ceiling. "Tin Angel" was a derogatory term for folksingers used by owner Rich Machlin's college roommate, as in "get that tin angel off the stereo and give us some rock 'n' roll!"

-- LaVern Baker, having lost both legs to diabetes and wearing a wig, nonetheless put on a sexy performance shortly before her death in 1997.

-- Not only does Glenn Tilbrook regularly takes his audiences onto the streets of Olde City, he once offered an impromptu post-show free performance from the steps of the old historic church across Market Street from the club.
